Ignis vs Grand i10
Comparing two cars with a clear cut verdict is always a difficult thing to do. This becomes much more difficult if the cars belong to different categories.
Hyundai i10 is a popular hatchback with more than 10000 units sold per month. In fact it has been the best seller car from Hyundai competing with Maruti Suzuki Swift and Baleno.
Maruti Suzuki Ignis is a new car launched in January 2013. Being a Maruti Suzuki product it has been a phenomenal success with booking period of more than 3 months. Though Maruti Suzuki is promoting Ignis as a crossover or a small SUV it looks more like a taller hatchback.
Ignis is a promising car bound to give a good competition to Grand i10. If waiting period of Ignis will be within limit it will beat grand i10 sales very soon. Grand i10 is being remodeled and we can have some interesting changes in near future. Let us see how Ignis is better than grand i10.
Though look is a matter of personal choice, I feel that sharp characteristic of Ignis may beats grand i10. It is important to note that Hyundai Grand i10 is a very smart looking car indeed.
No doubt both the cars look sportier but the front of Ignis looks more aggressive. Day time running lamps, LED projector headlamps, Chrome of fog lamps make Ignis more appealing. Also height of Ignis is 75 mm more that the grand i10 which give feel of a small SUV.
Tried and Tested Engine
Powertrain used in Maruti Suzuki Ignis is same 1.2 liter petrol engine used in Swift and Baleno. So you need not to worry at all about the engine. This has been the most successful engine for hatchback. More over the compact size of Ignis and lighter weight as compared to Swift and Baleno will provide advantage in pickup and mileage.
More over there is an option of diesel engine in Ignis. Ignis is available in manual as well as automatic transmission. If you drive more Ignis will suit your pocket more than i10 grand. The power available in both is almost same so you will not feel the difference. Also the mileage offered by Ignis is much more than grand i10. With grand i10 you can expect an average of 12-13 kmpl in city and 16-17 on highways. Where as the petrol engine of Ignis will give you a mileage of 17-18 kmpl in city and 20-22 kmpl on highways. With diesel engine you can expect even better mileage of 20-22 in kmpl city and 25-26 kmpl on highways. Thus Ignis is better than grand i10 in term of fuel economy.
Features of Ignis makes it different from other cars. The basic safety features like ABS, EBD and Dual airbags are standard across all variants. So, even if you buy base model Sigma of Ignis you will get all these standard safety features. While in Grand i10 you will have these features only in top variant for which you need to pay more :). Besides safety features Ignis has many features like 7 inch display screen with apple car play which can be used for navigation as well as stereo. Steering mounted controls, dual color options for top variants alpha and zeta model make Ignis unique.
The Maruti Suzuki Trust Factor
Maruti Suzuki hold 47% of the car market share. With launch of Ignis it is expected to cross 50% market share. It has been one of the most trusted brands in India. With highest number of showrooms, dealers and service center it has been undoubtedly a market leader.
Maruti Suzuki Symbolize Trust as the Maruti Cars require low maintenance, fuel consumption is good and after sales service is excellent. Hyundai is not far behind Suzuki.
It hold second position in terms of showrooms and service centers. Still Hyundai will need more time to gel in with Indian mindset.
Ignis is available at Nexa Showrooms of Suzuki. It is the third car after S-Cross and Baleno to be sold through Nexa outlets. Nexa outlets are offering premium cars by Suzuki and has been highly successful particularly with Baleno.
So, in my opinion Ignis is better than Hyundai i10 in almost all departments whether it be looks, engine, brand value.
